India is eagerly awaiting cooperation from Canadian authorities regarding the three Indian men arrested and charged with the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar stated on Saturday.
Canadian police formally charged the trio on Friday in connection with Nijjar's murder and are investigating potential ties to the Indian government.
Jaishankar acknowledged receiving recent intelligence about the arrests, noting that the suspects likely have affiliations with Indian gangs. He emphasized the importance of transparent communication between law enforcement agencies.
Highlighting concerns over Canada's tolerance of organized crime networks from Punjab operating within its borders, Jaishankar underscored India's expectation for prompt updates from Canadian authorities regarding the ongoing investigation.
Sanjay Verma, India's high commissioner to Canada, expressed hope for regular updates from Canadian authorities regarding the status of the three arrested individuals. He emphasized that the matter is internal to Canada and refrained from commenting further on the issue.
The trio, all Indian nationals, were apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, according to police reports.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45, was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb known for its significant Sikh population. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously raised suspicions of Indian government involvement, sparking a diplomatic standoff with New Delhi.
